On most jobsites, access to power is usually limited. As such, many welding contractors will deploy diesel-engine welding machines on the jobsite. For safety reasons, the clients will usually have designated areas within the jobsite where the diesel welding machines can be placed. In many cases, these designated areas may be hundreds of meters away from the point of welding.
The Challenges of Welding at Height or Long Distances
After setting up the long welding cables at the diesel welding machine, the welder will carry his welding accessories to the welding location. During welding, it is normal that the welder will need to adjust the welding parameters. Currently, the welder has 3 options:
- The welder can walk back to the diesel welding machine to make the adjustments. However, this results in unnecessary downtime. In addition, unnecessary walking on the jobsite increases the risk of slips, trips, or falls.
- The welder can use a walkie-talkie to communicate with a helper to make the adjustments on the diesel welding machine. Often, the helper takes some time to finetune the arc on behalf of the welder and can lead to welder frustration.
- In some instances, welders may not bother to make the adjustments and just make do with the preset parameters. In such cases, there is a high risk of weld defects and failures.
